Climbs & Slides

Off device, multigenerational, 3D game.

A game for active play

This project was commissioned by the Asian Civilisations Museum of Singapore for the Let's Play exhibition, which opened to the public in 2025. The exhibition explored the rich history of Asian games and the role they have played in shaping culture, identity, and community.

We chose to reimagine the classic game of Snakes and Ladders, completely transforming its form and meaning to create Climbs & Slides.

The traditional 2D board game was reinterpreted as a 3D interactive sculpture—a design-art piece that can be visually appreciated as well as played. Carefully crafted from solid wood with machined aluminium components, the piece offers visitors a unique tactile and acoustic experience as they interact with it.

At the heart of the gameplay is a reframing of modern life: positive actions lead you up the ladder, while contemporary negative habits send you down the slide. Finally, and most importantly, this piece is meant to encourage people of all ages to step away from their devices, connect with one another, and stay active without it feeling like an exercise.

Try it for yourself.

Simulation settings

Players walk to the dice totem and move their own tokens. Overshoots move backwards. Steps include short, occasional movements between turns. 100% tries a short walk by one waiting player at each available opportunity; it does not mean continuous walking. 0 turns spontaneous movement off. Players also step aside when someone needs access. Steps = walking distance ÷ step length. These are estimates, not recorded footsteps. Game duration varies with the dice and slides; an average is not a minimum.
